What you’ll do:

  • The Laboratory Technician will be responsible to assist the Coatings and Sealants Chemist in new product development initiatives and formulation maintenance for Tropical Roofing
  • Product's asphalt and polymeric coatings, mastics, adhesives and sealants
  • Perform direct Laboratory bench activities including small quantity mixing and physical property testing
  • Help maintain quality control testing protocols including sampling, testing, and data recording
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and clean standard Laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Assist in plant scale-up test batches to collect and record process and QC data
  • Analyze test data and make recommendations regarding future work
  • Document all work done in a clear and logical manner
  • Work in a manner consistent with Tropical’s safety programs

Our ideal candidate:

Education and Experience:

  • Associates Degree in Applied Sciences or Material Science; or 1 year of relevant work experience in a similar role is preferred
  • A common sense approach to Laboratory practices but willing and able to think outside the box
  • Demonstrated ability to operate Laboratory scale and/or plant process equipment including PLC readouts and controls
  • Product sample preparation and shipping to internal or external sources
  • Working and communicating with Operations Team to troubleshoot to resolve scale-up issues and/or concerns
  • Knowledge of QC/QA management programs with ISO certifications preferred
  • Possess an understanding of the chemistries, physical properties, processing and storage of raw materials and finished product formulations
  • Experience working with physical property and analytical testing equipment including but not limited to Tensilometer, Environmental Chamber, Brookfield and Stormer Viscometer, Microscopy analysis, Cone Penetrometer, Xenon and QUV Accelerated Weathering preferred

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment
  • Work well with and be respectful of others within and outside the organization to effectively utilize all resources available to the fullest
  • Utilizes a logical and analytical scientific approach incorporating critical thinking skills to accurately batch and test materials
  • Expertise and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Completes assignments in a timely manner documenting all work accurately and completely
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic, multi-task oriented environment
  • Provides leadership by example regarding safe work practices and testing procedures
  • Ability to lift up to 70 lbs. when required
